30x40 cm ~ Painting, Pastel
The original pastel study “Serge. Symbols of Yakutia” was created from life in the summer of 2025 during a plein air trip to Yakutia. The place of inspiration was the Lensky Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve “Druzhba” in the village of Sottintsy — a landmark location considered the birthplace of the city of Yakutsk.
The artwork depicts a row of wooden serge — sacred tethering posts of the Sakha people. These symbols played a special role in the culture of the Yakuts: they served not only as posts for tying horses but also as a means of communication with spirits, markers of boundaries, and sacred spaces.
The central element of the composition is a serge in the form of an Orthodox cross. Such imagery reflects the penetration and strengthening of Christianity in Yakutia several centuries ago. At the same time, the “cross-serge” preserved elements of shamanic symbolism, serving as a sacred sign in rituals. This synthesis reveals the unique interaction between the traditional faith of the Sakha people and Orthodox culture.
The composition is built on the contrast of a bright yellow background and a pure blue sky, giving the work a festive and sunny character. In the foreground, delicate white anemones — spring flowers of Yakutia — bloom, symbolizing renewal and harmony.
The work is executed in a graphic manner with restrained colors, conveying the clarity and strength of the northern nature.
